Managing "smartest person in the room" mindset.

Consider a scenario in a corporate environment where an IT technical expert with a "smartest person in the room" mindset is working on a critical project.

Scenario: Implementing a New Cloud Infrastructure.

A large corporation is transitioning its on-premises infrastructure to a cloud-based solution. This project is crucial for the company's digital transformation and future scalability.

Key Stakeholders:

  1. The IT Technical Expert: Known for their deep technical knowledge and expertise in cloud technologies.

  2. Project Manager: Responsible for overseeing the project and ensuring it meets deadlines and budget constraints.

  3. Team Members: A diverse group of IT professionals, including network engineers, developers, and system administrators.

Situation:

During a project meeting, the team is discussing the design and implementation of the new cloud infrastructure. The project manager outlines the goals and opens the floor for suggestions and input from the team.

Behaviour of the IT Technical Expert:

  • Dominates the Conversation: The IT Tech Expert frequently interrupts others, dismissing their ideas without fully hearing them out. They believe their approach is the only viable solution.

  • Overcomplicates Solutions: Tech Expert proposes highly complex and technically advanced solutions that are difficult for the rest of the team to understand and implement. They do not take into consideration the team's current skill set and the company's existing infrastructure.

  • Lacks Collaboration: The Expert works in isolation, rarely consulting with other team members or seeking their input. When issues arise, they prefer to solve them on their own rather than involving the team.

  • Dismisses Feedback: When team members express concerns or suggest alternative approaches, the Tech Expert dismisses their feedback, believing they know better due to their superior technical knowledge.

Consequences:

  • Decreased Team Morale: Team members feel undervalued and frustrated because their ideas are not being considered. This leads to decreased motivation and engagement.

  • Project Delays: Tech Expert’s complex solutions are difficult to implement, causing delays and requiring additional resources to execute. The lack of collaboration also results in communication breakdowns and inefficiencies.

  • Knowledge Silos: By not sharing knowledge and working collaboratively, Tech Expert creates a knowledge silo. This makes it difficult for the team to support and maintain the new infrastructure in the long run.

Resolution:

The project manager recognises the issues and intervenes. They organise a team-building workshop to improve collaboration and communication skills. They also set up regular check-ins where every team member is encouraged to share their progress and ideas. The IT Technical Expert is given feedback on their behaviour and is encouraged to mentor and train the team, leveraging their expertise in a more inclusive and collaborative manner.

Result:

Through enhanced collaboration and communication, the team operates in a more cohesive manner. The Expert acknowledges the importance of others' input and adjusts their approach to foster inclusivity. Consequently, the project advances seamlessly, culminating in the successful implementation of the new cloud infrastructure through the joint efforts of the entire team.

Wow, sometimes the situation is actually easier to handle than it appears!
